More than 90% tea lovers in Taiwan drink oolong tea (including paochong tea); this is very different from western countries which most tea lovers drink black tea instead. Therefore, to know of Formosa tea and Taiwan's tea culture, you may have to start from experiencing Formosa oolong. Due to the big demand from local people, most tea plantations are grown oolong tea. To satisfy with more and more local critical tea drinkers for oolong, most high quality oolong tea produced in Taiwan is for local consumption. TC has been dedicating to promote and introduce high quality Formosa oolong to international tea market for years, thus all available teas at our online shop are same as what we offer to local tea drinkers.
Because of the soil, elevation, climate and mature manufacturing method are changed by tea-growing areas; Taiwan's outstanding oolong is numerous and features for its high quality on appearance, aroma and flavor according to its growing area. Therefore, it is sometimes not easy for a new Formosa tea lover to select idea teas. For this reason, we have the following suggestions and recommendations for a beginner.
1. It is suggested to begin with low elevation green oolong. The representative teas in this field are Four Seasons Oolong and Jade Oolong. Especially for Jade Oolong, it is well accepted by western people due to its unique sweetness. Both organic and non-organic teas of above 2 varieties are outstanding, you can select it depends on your preference and budget.
2. After you have a better experience for low elevation green oolong, we suggest you to try high mountain green oolong which is the most popular oolong in Taiwan now. Alishan Oolong and Lishan Oolong are the ideal selections among high mountain oolongs. Both teas feature for great smoothness in the throat, no bitterness. The taste of high mountain oolong is richer than low elevation oolong, and is tolerant in repetitive soaking.
3. Roasted oolong is our suggestion after green oolong. In fact, roasted oolong is the favorite of most tea connoisseurs in Taiwan. Roasted Jin-Xuan Oolong and Dong Ding Oolong are the representatives of roasted oolongs. The typical characteristics of roasted oolong are its strong but pleasant baked aroma and lasting sweetness in your throat after drinking.
4. If you like long-fermented tea which is similar to black tea flavor, Oriental Beauty Tea , Gui Fei Oolong Tea and Organic Ruby Oolong Tea are good choices. If you like light-fermented tea which is similar to green tea flavor, Paochong Tea could be a choice.
5. Lastly, oolong tea is not the only choice among Formosa teas. The population of local drinkers for high quality Formosa black tea is increasing. Formosa Assam Black Tea and Formosa Ruby Black Tea are our recommendation. If you are also a black tea lover, you will not miss trying the above 2 teas.
